When AI Rhymes "Once" with "Never"

A screenshot circulating online shows an AI-generated list of words supposedly rhyming with "once" - including "never", "ever", "then", and "though". Clearly, none of these are true rhymes. This outcome highlights a fundamental flaw in how some AI systems process language tasks that require phonetic reasoning. Rather than analyzing sound patterns, the algorithm may have relied on semantic or contextual similarity, mistaking common word pairings in prose or poetry for rhymes. This kind of failure underscores the gap between statistical associations and actual linguistic structure. While possibly amusing (?), it also serves as a cautionary example of AI's limitations when applied to human concepts like rhyme. As large language models expand in scope, such examples remind us that fluency is not the same as understanding.
