An Alien Milks a Cow
This is a snippet of a larger set of similar images that were supposed to show a picture of an alien milking a cow. The AI machine understands patterns (like alien, cow, milk), but not necessarily the anatomical logic that binds them. It composites these elements, and cycles through a sequence of hand-as-udder, udder-in-air, milk-from-nowhere, and so on. This is less a failure of the tool than of our assumptions about its understanding, as the AI tool doesn’t "know" cow physiology (nor alien physiology, but who is knowledgable in that?). It only knows pixels statistically likely to follow certain prompts.
(It is also possible that the AI tool actively avoided the imagery due to some caution around sexual imagery...).
Anyway, the lesson is, as always: pattern-matching is not comprehension.
